KATHMANDU, April 18: The District Administration Office (DAO) Kavrepalanchowk has instructed the cargo vehicles plying the highways in the district to weigh their loads mandatorily.

In the discussion of DAO, transport entrepreneurs and stakeholders, instructions have been given to compulsorily weigh cargo vehicles from Thursday.

In the year 2078 BS, load weighing centers were established in three locations of Kavre - Keraghari in Panchkhal Municipality, Naikintar in Panauti and Bhakunde in Namo Buddha. Since then, transport entrepreneurs have been unwilling to do that. The highways in the district are becoming dilapidated as a result of not weighing the loads of cargo vehicles.

After the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a circular to bring the load centers into operation in the district, the office called the representatives of the concerned bodies for discussion on Monday.

Chief District Officer Punya Bikram Paudel said that from next Thursday, cargo vehicles have been instructed to compulsorily weigh their loads. “We will now operate a load weighing center no matter what. Cargo vehicles will be forced to weigh their loads," he said.

All the three local governments have been requesting to operate the load weighing centers and get the 'load sheet' for transportation. Global Machinery and Technology Services Pvt Ltd took responsibility for the weighing services of Panauti and Panchkhal towns, while Namobuddha town instructed Kotkalika Machinery and Technology Services Pvt Ltd to carry out compulsory weighing of cargo vehicles.

Saroj Kuinkel of Global Machinery and Technology Services Pvt Ltd claimed that if all cargo vehicles are weighed, it will help a lot in road safety. According to the guidelines, cargo vehicles with a capacity of more than six wheels must carry a mandatory load. A rule has been made to pay Rs 150 per vehicle for weighing at the load weighing centers.
