KATHMANDU, July 26: The Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police arrested a man who was absconding since the last 15 years after being accused of murder charge.
The arrested has been identified as Dan Bahadur Tamang aka Bibek aka Samrat Yonjan, 42, who is originally from Khaniyapani-6 of Ramechap district and is currently residing in Bauddha area of Kathmandu.
According to the police, a gang of 20-25 people led by Tamang had attacked Dhurba Gopal Karmacharya with sharp weapons while he was enjoying leisure time with his friends in a restaurant at Aadarshanagar of Bhaktapur on the eve of May 1, 2001.
Karmacharya, who had sustained sharp injuries in head and chest, was pronounced dead at Bhaktapur District Hospital while one of his friends, Kiran Dhoubanjaar, was also seriously injured, according to the police.
Soon after the incident, Tamang, the mastermind of the attack, went into hiding at different places in Kathmandu and then fled to Malaysia for several years via India.
Police said they had been searching for Tamang ever since Prem Gopal Karmacharya and Rajya Laxmi Karmacharya, kin of the deceased, filed complaints against the accused.
However, the case was put on hold and the court proceedings were heading nowhere as Tamang was absconding.
For the last few years, he was operating a Thangka painting business in Bauddha.
Based on a tip off, a squad of police arrested Tamang on Friday. He was presented before the Bhaktapur District Court on Sunday for further proceedings.
The District Attorney's Office had charge-sheeted him in the murder case demanding life term and confiscation all properties.
