CHITWAN, July 31: Two passenger buses collided head-on Saturday night in Manahari VDC-3, Makawanpur district, killing nine people and injuring at least 31.
Six among the deceased died on the spot, two died on the way to hospital, and the remaining one died while undergoing treatment, informed Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Bamdev Gautam of the District Police Office (DPO), Makawanpur.

A passenger bus (Na 5 Kha 2055) en route to Gaighat of Udayapur district from Kathmandu had collided with another bus (Na 5 Kha 4064) en route to Kathmandu from Kakarbhitta of Jhapa district at around 9:30 pm last night.
The deceased have been identified as 10-year-old Mani Ratna Chaudhary and Binod Chaudhary, 25 of Triyuga Municipality-10; Udayapur; three-year-old Muskan Chaudhary, of Gaighat-8, Udayapur; Bhoninisat Tamang, 30, of Bhuttar VDC-9, Udayapur; and Santosh Chaudhary, 27, whose address has not been identified.
Similarly, Laxmi Prasad Adhikari, 39, of Topgachhi, Jhapa; Hansi Ram Rajbanshi of Baniyani, Jhapa; Bishal Dhami, of Singol, Bara; and Yogendra Das, Kanjanrog-10, Saptari; also died in the accident, according to the DPO.
Among the injured, 14 are undergoing treatment at Hetauda-based Chure Hill Hospital and one at an eye hospital. The remaining 16 have already returned home after receiving treatment, informed DSP Gautam, adding that investigation is underway.
“In a police statement, one of the drivers, Badri Khadka said technical failure caused the accident. He said his steering wheel did not work properly,” said DSP Gautam.
