Every year the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts hosts an art exhibition, inviting artists from all over Nepal to showcase their talent in painting, sculpting, photography etc. The exhibition hopes to inspire all kinds of artists by giving them an opportunity to showcase their works. Since 2010, the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts has also been able to promote underground artists in Nepal by sending them to various exhibitions and competitions both within and outside Nepal.
This year a grand total of 698 artworks were submitted, out of which 515 were selected and exhibited. Each artist was allowed to submit two artworks and the works of 453 artists were showcased in the end. The exhibition got a lot of painting submissions and there are 193 contemprary paintings currently on display. However, only two performance and digital artworks each are on exhibition.
The exhibition was inaugurated by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, Ishwar Pokhrel, on May 16 and will continue till June 5 and is open to all.

According to Sabina Pokharel, staff at Nepal Academy of Fine Arts, the National Fine Arts Exhibition is held around mid April every year but this year the date was shifted a month later due to unavailability of space. Around two months before the exhibition, the academy released statements via various media outlets calling artists from all over Nepal to showcase their art. Artists could submit their works under 12 categories including contemporary painting, traditional painting, contemporary sculpture, traditional sculpture, handicraft, folk art, photography, installation, video, performance, cartoon, and digital.
“From each category, one art piece is chosen by a council of judges related to each field and is given the national prize – a certificate and a cash prize of Rs 60,000,” explained Pokharel adding that special awards were also given out to an artist from each province as well. Similarly, for his contribution in fine arts in Nepal, artist and sculptor Chini Kaji Tamrakar and artist Ratna Kumar Rai were awarded the Arniko Fine Arts Award along with a cash prize of Rs 100,000.
