Beguiling Bhaktapur

You often think of narrow alleys flanked by shops displaying their colorful wares and temples that date back centuries when you think of Bhaktapur. The reality doesn’t deviate much. You often think of narrow alleys flanked by shops displaying their colorful wares and temples that date back centuries when you think of Bhaktapur. The reality doesn’t deviate much. Literally the “city of devotees”, masses throng to the streets every day with cameras and eyes wide open to revel in the aesthetics of Bhaktapur.

In the early hours of the morning, the air is warm, birds chirp softly and people go about their lives as they begin yet another day. It is then that that the buildings assume an earthen glow, basking in the rays of the morning sun. It’s a sight you must see. I assure you it will take your breath away.

Heritages of great historical value greet you at each turn. Looming high and mighty, they stand testimony to years of history, of ancient values and spectacular architecture. And you cannot and should not miss the juju dhau, literally the “king of curd”, in their earthen bowls, when you are in Bhaktapur. These are evidences of Bhaktapur’s great love for everything sweet.

Tucked safely on the outskirts of the durbar square is the pottery square. Home to generations of pottery makers, it is a display of earthen pots in all stages of making. An assembly of shops displaying pottery wares and various items adds to the color of the space. Visit the pottery square if you want to buy earthenware or want to learn a bit of pottery yourself. At any given point of time, you will find someone willing to teach you for a nominal fee.

Of all the durbar squares, the Bhaktapur Durbar Square is the most magnificent one. It’s held on to its roots and rich heritage despite being greatly affected by the earthquakes of 2015. I urge you to stroll about Bhaktapur when you have some time and rediscover it in all its glory and splendor.
