BIRGUNJ, Jan 24: Construction work on a bus terminal in Birgunj is still not complete 45 months after the project started.

An inspection team of Birgunj Municipality led by Chief Administrative Officer Bhumi Kumar Bhusal found that many works were yet to be done in the project which was initially planned to be completed within 24 months of inception.

The project worth Rs 215 million was undertaken by Roshan Pappu J B Sang following an agreement with Birgunj Municipality. The project is supported by the Government of Germany in a loan agreement made with the government with an objective to modernize and develop the municipality.

Commenting on the progress, Bhusal said: “The contractor said that the project was 95 percent complete, however, there are a lot of minor jobs left which will take a lot of time to complete.”

Bhusal further questioned the working of the contractor company, stating that the extension could be revoked based on a clause in the contract. He added that the municipality has issued a final warning to the contractor to complete the project by the latest date.

The municipality has issued a final deadline to polish up the work for the modern bus terminal by the second week of February. The municipality has also directed the contractor to improve the quality of construction of many components that make up the terminal.

The project, which is already 22 months late from its initial schedule, is planned to feature modern services like bus parking, ticket counters, bus platforms, resting places, first-aid center, travel agent offices, cafés, and restrooms among other facilities.

The bus terminal that is built in 3.34 acres of land is situated along the road connecting Birgunj Customs Office to Gandak Chowk in the eastern side of the city.
