Counting of votes resumes from Saturday night at Deumai

ILAM, May 15: The counting of votes has resumed in Deumai Municipality of Ilam district since last night after the political parties reached an agreement.

ILAM, May 15: The counting of votes has resumed in Deumai Municipality of Ilam district since last night after the political parties reached an agreement.



The counting of votes was halted after a clash erupted at a polling station of Deumai Municipality in Ilam after employees on poll duty were found carrying election stamps where the votes were being counted.

As many as 22 security personnel were injured when angry youths pelted stones at the municipal office. After the situation became tense, police fired three rounds of bullets in the air. 


A team comprising Chief District Officer (CDO) Madhav Dhungana and District Police Chief, Superintendent of Police, Mahendra Kumar Shrestha reached the spot and resumed the counting of votes after discussing the matter with the stakeholders.


According to CDO Dhungana, another set of employees has been deployed from the district headquarters to count the votes after an agreement was reached not to include some of the disputed employees. "The counting of votes in Deumai is going on peacefully now," he said.
