DADELDHURA, Jan 28: The rural villagers here are forced to drink the contaminated water of the river after the prime source of water dried up owing to prolonged drought.

Many villages in Dadeldhura only witnessed slight rainfall from mid October to mid January due to which its water resources have dried up.

A single water tap in Mastamadaun – 9 feeds 41 families and as water is scarce they are facing difficulties in satiating their thirst and carrying out daily chores. They have now looked to the river for water. "We are forced to queue up for hours to get water by leaving our household works," Harina Bista of Goli village said.

"Earlier we used to have enough water even for irrigation but now as the water source has dried up we are in dire straits," Lamikade Drinking Water Consumer Committee Chairman, Dhan Bahadur Malla confided.

The water crisis has hit Chipur, Bhadrapur, Debal, Koteli, Bhageshwor and Manilek among various other municipalities of Dadeldhura.

The underground water source has not been 'recharged' due to prolonged drought, Rural Water Resource Management Project Programme Coordinator, Ramdutta Joshi said. RSS
