KATHMANDU, July 9: The government has made it mandatory to disclose the details of importers and distributors of imported goods from mid-July. The Department of Customs has published a notice and said that while importing various types of goods, the full details of the importer and market distributor should be disclosed.

“According to the provision in Sub-section (4) of Section 18 of Schedule 1 of the Finance Act, 2050 related to customs, goods ready for importation after mid-July 2023 must be labeled with full details of the importer and market distributor before sending them to the market for sale and distribution,” reads the notice issued by the customs department.

According to the Department, the following details of the importer and market distributor should be mentioned in the label of the imported goods - name, address, email address/website of the importer and the market distributor, EXIM code and the label should be applied when the goods are imported or before they are sent for sale in the market.

In addition to raw materials used in the form of inputs for the manufacturing and construction industry, industrial machinery and equipment, and other types of goods that are directly sold and distributed to consumers, it is necessary to label all types of goods, except for goods that have undergone label processing, in each unit of the goods based on the nature, size, and weight of the goods. After that, it is advised to label in smaller units when packaging.

Similarly, since the same importer can have many market distributors, the label of the market distributor can be applied by the relevant market distributor himself, the label should be in the Nepali or English language. The distributor and retailer should maintain organized records of the products sent, ensuring that the label is not misused. The distributor/retailer can also mention their identification in bar code, QR code, security sticker, etc.
