SINDHULI, June 23: With the summer season in full stride, cases of viral and diarrheal diseases have increased markedly at the District Hospital, Sindhuli.
From the morning to late evening, patients, mostly children, suffering from viral fever and diarrhea have been visiting the hospital and large numbers.

Doctors said extreme heat, muddy rain and contaminated water sources are mainly responsible for the sudden spike in the number of patients. “Most of the patients are viral fever and diarrhea cases,” said Dr Sumitra Gautam, acting chief of the District Hospital.
According to Gautam, people need to be extra careful about the cleanliness of food and water to avoid illness during summer.
A man with a child in tow who was in a queue for an appointment with the doctor on Friday said his child was suffering from high fever. “I think it’s viral fever, so I came for a checkup,” said the father, adding, “Many people in our village are suffering from either diarrhea or viral fever.”
According to officials at the District Hospital, since the past few weeks, more than 100 patients have been visiting the hospital every day. “Some days we see up to 300 patients,” said Acting Chief Dr Gautam.
Doctors have warned the locals especially children from eating mangoes and raw maize among other things.
Doctors said the number of patients could rise further as the muddy rain over the past few days have contaminated water sources. Despite knowing that the water is contaminated, many people living in the villages are forced to drink the water as they have no access to clean drinking water.
