Accuses PM Dahal of volte-face over affiliations to new medical colleges
KATHMANDU, Sept 12: Accusing the government of breaching the agreement reached to end his eighth hunger strike, Dr Govinda KC has warned to start another round of fast-unto-death.
Demanding reform in the medical education sector, Dr KC, a senior professor at the Institute of Medicine (IoM), has already mounted fast-unto-death eight times in the last four years.
Dr KC, who is a senior orthopedic surgeon at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in Maharajgunj, has given one week's ultimatum to the government to fulfill the past pacts.
He accused Prime Minister Puspa Kamal Dahal, who had assured him of taking steps to fulfill the past agreements when he was not in power, of conspiring to give affiliations to medical colleges run by people close to him.
“Now the time has come to resume another hunger strike,” he said.
Dr KC informed that he would start a fresh round of hunger strike from September 19.
Energy Minister Janardan Sharma, representing Prime Minister Dahal, and Arjun Narshing KC, on behalf of Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, had met KC and promised him that all past agreements signed between him and the government would be implemented.
Dr KC had also met with Prime Minister Dahal a few days ago and reminded him about the deal.
He complained that PM Dahal has again assured him to fulfill the agreements but has directed to give affiliation to new medical college.
Dr KC had called off his 16-day long hunger strike one and a half months ago following the four-point agreement signed between him and the government.
