EC refuses PM’s poll deferral plea

KATHMANDU, June 14: The Election Commission (EC) has refused Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deubas proposal to defer second round of elections scheduled for June 28.

KATHMANDU, June 14: The Election Commission (EC) has refused Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deubas proposal to defer second round of elections scheduled for June 28.



In a meeting held with chief election commissioners and commissioners have sought election body’s nod to defer polls in Province 2 and Province 5 saying efforts to bring poll-opposing parties on board the election process are underway.

“Nomination is happening tomorrow and home ministry has also assured us to provide security. That’s why we are all prepared for June 28 elections,” said election commissioner Narendra Dahal.


At the meeting held in presence of former prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, former home minister Bimalendra Nidhi and other senior leaders from ruling parties both leaders have asked whether they could defer the elections in Province 2 and Province 5. Second round of election is taking place in Province 1, 2, 5 and 7 while polls had already been conducted in Province 3,4 and 6.


The election body is briefing media about its poll preparations made for second round of elections so far.


Madhes-based parties are protesting demanding that the constitution amendment bill be endorsed before the election
