KATHMANDU, Sept 7: The deadline served by the Election Commission (EC) to the elected people's representatives at the provincial and local levels to choose the party is expiring today.
The EC had marked September 7 as the deadline for the people’s representatives of the CPN-UML and the Janata Samajbadi party (JSP) at the province and the local level to take decision whether they want to be part of the new parties formed my Madhav Kumar Nepal and Mahantha Thakur. A large number of people’s representatives of the UML and JSP have authenticated their signatures in favor of the new parties, namely CPN (Unified Socialist) and the Democratic Socialist Party.

The parties formally split, giving rise to the birth of two new political parties, after President Bidya Devi Bhandari issued a ‘party-split’ ordinance. The ordinance had lowered the threshold for splitting parties to 20 percent in the central committee or the parliamentary party.
If the people's representatives at the provincial and local levels do not choose the party formed after splitting from the old party, it will be considered as abandoning the party. The party can then take action.
