CHITWAN, Sept 16:The escape of inmates convicted in one-horned rhino poaching cases from Chitwan Prison has heightened concerns for ongoing conservation efforts.
Of the 48 prisoners serving sentences for rhino-related crimes, only 26 have returned to custody so far. Out of the total 744 inmates housed at the prison, all but two fled during the September 10 jailbreak. As of now, 409 have returned, including 26 convicted in rhino poaching cases.
One-horned rhino 'no poaching' reaches 516 days
Prison Chief Rabindra Prasad Dhungana said the administration has contacted the escapees to ensure their return, but 60 inmates remain out of contact.
In response, Chitwan National Park has tightened security. “A list of the escapees has been prepared, and monitoring in and around the park has been increased,” said Information Officer Avinash Thapa Magar. The park considers the escape of rhino smugglers a serious security challenge.
