Excavator operator kills ward chair hitting him with bucket of excavator

LAHAN, June 26: Surya Kumar Shrestha, ward chairperson of Ishwarpur Municipality-3 of Sarlahi, was killed late Friday night, according to the police.



Chairperson Shrestha was hit by the bucket of an excavator by Rabin, 38, (Harka Bahadur Tamang) – the operator of the excavator – following a heated discussion with the contractor, according to district police chief SSP Santosh Singh Rathor.


Both the contractor, Prem Raj Dahal, and the operator, Rabin, have been arrested by the police.

Dahal was arrested soon after the incident and Rabin who was at large after killing Shrestha was arrested Saturday morning from Lalbandi.


Chairperson Shrestha was on an inspection of an ongoing public pond upgrade program being carried out with the investment of the municipality at Bhaktipur on Friday. 


According to local people, Shrestha, Dahal and Rabin were seen in a hotel till late Friday night. It has been learnt that they returned to the construction site following an argument in the hotel. Rabin then hit chairman Shrestha with the bucket of the excavator and buried him, according to the police.


Shrestha was then rescued by the police personnel from the incident site and was declared dead by District Hospital at Malangawa.
