Fifth Nepali succumbs to COVID-19 infection in the United Kingdom

LONDON, April 9: Nottingham-based Shiva Shrestha succumbed to COVID-19 infection on Wednesday, becoming the fifth Non-resident Nepali to die of the contagion in the past two weeks in the United Kingdom.

LONDON, April 9: Nottingham-based Shiva Shrestha succumbed to COVID-19 infection on Wednesday, becoming the fifth Non-resident Nepali to die of the contagion in the past two weeks in the United Kingdom.



Shrestha, 58, was the former British Gurkha veteran.  He was in self-isolation at his home for the past one week after suffering from coronavirus.


According to Pashupati Pokharel, a senior Non-resident Nepali living in Nottingham, Shrestha died while undergoing treatment in a local hospital. He was rushed to the hospital at 3 am (local time) on Wednesday after he faced breathing difficulty.

Shrestha, originally hailing from Solukhumbu, was living with his two sons and wife in Nottingham. He was also the founding member of Nottingham Nepali society.


Earlier, Gurkha veteran Chet Prasad Gurung, 59, died of coronavirus at Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow, United Kingdom.


Another Gurkha veteran Lila Bahadur Rai, 66, also died of COVID-19 in the same hospital after suffering from the deadly virus. Another 77-year-old Nepali man who had gone to meet his daughter in Nottingham also died of coronavirus.  


Nepal's Prashant Aryal, 40, also died of coronavirus in London in late March. He was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital after health complications.


It is learnt that many Nepali Nationals based in United Kingdom are infected by the coronavirus.
