Food grain production to increase 3.9 percent in the current FY

KATHMANDU, May 28: The country’s food grain production is estimated to grow 3.9 percent by the end of the current fiscal year.



The Economic Survey 2022/23 shows that the production of the grains including paddy, wheat and corn will increase to 11.20 million tons by mid-July 2023. In the last fiscal year, production of food grains declined by 3.3 percent.

This year, the food crops have been planted in 71.4 percent of the cultivable land. As of mid-March 2023, Nepal had a stock of 11,534 tons of food in the National Food Security Storage. Similarly, the country has maintained a stock of 8,000 tons of food in the SAARC Food Bank.


In the review period, 87 percent of 1.76 million hectares of irrigable land received irrigation facilities. Out of the total arable land of 2.640 million hectares, 58 percent have access to irrigation facilities.  


According to the Economic Survey, the country has a stock of 520,000 tons of chemical fertilizers. Of the total quantity, urea amounts to 310,000 tons, while DAP and potash are 190,000 tons and 20,000 tons, respectively.
