Free media a must to promote democracy: NC General Secy Sharma

KATHMANDU, Dec 20: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma has underlined the need of sending the message of social transformation through actions.  



Talking to media persons today following his election to the party general secretary post under the party’s 14th General Convention, he said that social transformation was not needed not just for one particular party, but also for the entire nation.

He argued that social transformation was a must along with infrastructure development to build the nation and it could be achieved by eliminating superstitions and various ill-practices such as child marriage, domestic violence against women, acid attack, and so on.  “It is the common responsibility of all to fight such unwanted practices,” he said.


The 50-year-old leader who had the experience of serving as the Spokesperson of the NC for three years said that the party's newly-elected general secretary and the party president were responsible for further uniting the party. He pledged to be media-friendly during his tenure as the party general secretary. 


On a different note, he said he was always committed to citizens’ fundamental rights including the press freedom guaranteed by the Constitution. “Free media and multi-party competition will enhance the status of democracy,” he added.
