NEPALGUNJ, Sept  8: Bheri Zonal Hospital, the biggest government hospital in Bheri zone, is spreading disease instead of curing it. That is what the patients and visitors say as piles of unattended garbage continue to trouble them.

“We cannot breathe freely, it stinks everywhere here,” a visitor said. He added that he cannot rush out of the hospital and get fresh air as he has 'duty' to look after a bed ridden relative. Requesting anonymity, he added that he would have given anything to get rid of such filthy place.

Garbage in the hospital has not been collected for over a week. Rotten sanitary pads, medicines and other hospital wastes are littered all around. “We cannot breathe well,” say the patients. According to them, lack of toilets is another issue and those which are in place are simply not usable.

Interestingly, the hospital administration informed that there are 17 staff for its cleanliness. However, the issue of sanitation and garbage management gets into controversy time and again due to bidding process and contractors, according to the hospital staff.

“The problem is due to the current contractor who is not performing the duty. We have been trying our best to solve the issue,” said Shyam Sundar Yadav, Medical Superintendent at the hospital. “They have not picked garbage for a week now.

So there are filth everywhere,” he admitted. He added that the problem would be solved soon.

According to Yadav, the contractor is raising the issue of payment though he has been collecting the charge from the hospital on a monthly basis. Meanwhile, a staff at the hospital Jagdish Godiyal, stated that more staff are needed for proper sanitation.
