KATHMANDU, May 29: The government has allocated Rs 157 billion for social security programs including allowances for senior citizens.
Unveiling the budget for the upcoming fiscal year during a joint session of the Federal Parliament on Monday, Finance Minister Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat announced that the government has allocated Rs 157 billion for social security programs.
He said that the monthly allowance of Rs 4,000 to senior citizens who have reached the age of 68 years will get continuity in the upcoming fiscal year.

He added that funds have also been allocated for social security allowances given to the Dalits, single women, poor people, members of marginalized groups and communities who have reached the age of 60 years and also for children.
He said that the social security programs for scholarship, health care, health insurance, etc. have been given continuity.
A budget of Rs 134 billion was allocated for social security and medical treatment and financial assistance in the current fiscal year. Finance Minister Mahat said that the government had to find additional resources to provide pensions to retired employees.
