KATHMANDU, Sept 22: Lack of education is considered among the many problems hindering the progress of people of Musahar communities, a sub-group of Tarai Dalits. Now the situation seems to be gradually changing for the better as more numbers of students from the community are showing participation in higher level education.
Among a total of 92 students from the community who have passed SLC exams, 61 of them are currently pursuing higher secondary education in schools in various districts, according to Bhor, a non-governmental organization working with the Musahar community.

According to Raj Kumar Mahato, chairman of Bhor, 55 students of the community have been admitted to grade 11 this year, while four are currently studying in grade 12. Likewise, one has already completed grade 12 and yet another is attending college.
With an aim to educate Musahar people, one of the poorest in Nepal, the recent campaign of the organization bears Rs 51,000 for the education of each Mushahar student. The campaign aims to make children and youths of the community educated within the five years.
People from Musahar community in Parsa, Bara, Rautahat, Siraha, Saptari, Dhanusha, Mahottari, Sarlahi, Sunsari, Morang, and Nawalparasi districts are benefitting from the campaign, according to Mahato.
