Health ministry on a high alert as coronavirus 'XBB' confirmed in Nepal

KATHMANDU, Oct 29: The government has urged people to be cautious since the sub-variant XBB of Omicron variant has been detected in Nepal.



Joint Spokesperson at the Ministry of Health and Population, Dr Sameer Kumar Adhikari said that sub-variant omicron 'XBB' was found among many of those infected recently. The main reason for the increase in coronavirus infections compared to the previous month is due to sub-variant XBB of Omicron.

The sub-variant omicron 'XBB' was identified in the course of genomic sequencing of coronavirus infected people from different places of the country from August 21 to October 10.


Since mid-October, about four to 58 people have been infected with this virus every day. On October 18, 46 people were infected with coronavirus, while on October 19, a total of 48 people were infected. Similarly, 53 people were confirmed infected on October 20 while the number rose to 54 on October 21.


According to the statistics of the Ministry of Health and Population, there were 43 infections on October 22, 41 on October 23, 42 on October 24, 16 on October 25, 16 on October 26, 4 on October 27 and 14 on October 28.


"There is an increased concern that the infection will increase due to this variant," Dr Adhikari said. "Since there is a possibility that more infections may increase, the ministry has put all levels of the government on high alert."
