KATHMANDU, Jan 11: Stressing that the judiciary needs drastic reforms, the newly-appointed Chief Justice (CJ) Cholendra SJB Rana has said that he will take the full responsibility for judicial reforms in the country.

Saying that the role of middlemen was an external reason and the role of staffers an internal reason behind corruption in the judiciary, the CJ vowed that he would take strong measures to bring reforms in the judiciary. He made the remarks during an interaction with members of Constitutional Lawyers Forum (CLAF) on various issues relating to the judiciary on Thursday.

"I am not in a position to shift the role to others but am ready to take the responsibilities by myself," Rana said, adding, "There is a need for taking the full responsibility and I am ready for that."

The CJ also stated that he would be careful while assigning cases to the justices at the apex court so that controversies are averted. "I have made a plan so as to avert controversies."

Admitting that the constitutional bench could not function smoothly, Rana promised to bring in a suitable policy for its smooth functioning.

Saying that middlemen are rampant in the judiciary, the CJ promised to take action against them. He also accused the middlemen of tarnishing the image of the judiciary and the judges.

He said that the nexus between the middlemen and court staffer must be broken. "The involvement of the court staffers is another reason. So their nexus must be checked," Rana added.
