KATHMANDU, April 20: Hundreds of Hindu pilgrims have gathered in Matatirtha Temple on Thursday to remember their mothers and worship in the temple in their memory.

Every year, the new moon day of Baishakh (first month of Nepali calendar) is celebrated as the mother’s day (Aamako mukh herne din) in Nepal. This day is celebrated to honor the mother and motherhood. On this day, people offer sweets, clothes, and other gift items to their mother. 


Those who do not have a mother visit Matatirtha Temple located in Chandragiri Municipality of Kathmandu. People take a holy bath in the tap of the temple and make offerings (sida) to the priest. It is also believed that people can see the reflection of their mother’s face in Matatirtha pond on this day.
