India provides promised Rs 1.6b housing reconstruction grant

KATHMANDU, June 11: India has handed over Rs 1.6 billion to Nepal to reimburse the part of payment of the first and second tranches of housing reconstruction grant.



Indian envoy Manjeev Singh Puri handed over a check for the sum to Finance Secretary Rajan Khanal in the presence of Finance Minister Yuba Raj Khatiwada amid a special function at the Ministry of Finance on Monday.

“The amount has been released toward reimbursement of part payment of 1st and 2nd tranches of housing reconstruction extended by the government of India to 50,000 housing beneficiaries in Nuwakot and Gorkha districts,” said a press statement issued by the Indian embassy in Kathmandu. India has so far reimbursed a total of Rs 4.5 billion to Nepal.


The Indian government is partnering with the UNDP and the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) for providing Socio-Technical Facilitation to the house owners to ensure that they rebuild their homes as per the norms set by the government of Nepal.


On the occasion, Nepali officials appreciated the Indian sustained and generous humanitarian support for post-earthquake reconstruction.
