Baskota also said that the government wants social media to be registered in Nepal. "It does not mean every individual requires registering their social media accounts. Only the social media company should be registered here so that the state can generate revenue," he said.

Minister Baskota said that Facebook has already been registered in 35 countries and Google has been registered in 40 countries around the world. "In 2018 alone, Facebook paid more than USD 2 billion taxes to the United States and more than USD 970 million taxes to various countries. Similarly, Google had paid more than USD 3 billion in the United States the same year," he said.

Likewise, Minister Baskota urged social media companies to get registered in Nepal compulsorily.

The bill has been endorsed through the committee despite major opposition party Nepali Congress's disagreement.
