KATHMANDU, Jan 1: 2019 saw many individuals, who became inspiring characters for Nepal. The individuals featured in the list have done something extraordinary for society and nation as a whole. Republica has listed some heroic faces of 2019.
Nirmal Purja
Purja climbed all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter-high mountains in just 189 days. Purja, who has named his mission as ‘Project Possible’ broke the record of South Korean Kim Chang-ho, who took seven years, 11 months and 14 days to achieve the feat.
Ujjwal Thapa
Thapa has been helping the helpless for the last eight years. He has been raising funds for needy people. Thapa is physically present to help those in need and uses his contacts to raise funds and mobilize other kinds of support for them.
Sonam Tamang
This 23-year-old saved dozens of lives after a bus plunged into the Sunkoshi River on November 3. Right after the accident, Tamang jumped into the river with a rafting boat and saved lives of dozens of passengers – stuck in Sunkoshi River after the accident.
Durga Devi Panta
When the battle for justice for Nirmala took the country by storm, her mother Durga Devi Panta thought that everyone had come forward for her support. But over time, she realized dirty politics was at play when some people questioned her morality after she decided to accept Rs 1.8 million relief offered by the government and to cooperate with investigation. She continues to stand taller than the challenges.
Muskan Khatun
Khatun, a 14-year-old acid attack surviver, has shown exemplary zeal and courage to move ahead in life with even more conviction. In September while she was going to her Birgunj-based school, a group of youths threw acid at her leaving her seriously injured in the face and neck.
Bonita Sharma
The BBC listed Sharma among the 100 inspiring women from all across the world in 2019. A Nepali social activist, she owns a social organization Social Changemakers and Innovators (SOCHAI), which aims to improve health and nutrition of people, particularly, women, girls and children through education, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Kamala Ghimire
At just 12 years of age, Ghimire stunned everyone by her amazing ability to contest Dohori with seasoned Dohori singers. She hogged limelight after she contested in a popular TV show ‘Indreni’. Overwhelmed Nepalis from across the world sent her their best wishes and even financial support after her poor family background was revealed.
