KMC to provide Rs 25 per day per student of govt schools

KATHMANDU, August 28: Balendra Shah, the mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), has proposed providing 25 rupees per day per student to students studying at government schools.

KATHMANDU, August 28: Balendra Shah, the mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), has proposed providing 25 rupees per day per student to students studying at government schools.



According to sources, Mayor Shah has proposed giving Rs 25 per day for lunch expenses to all children studying up to eighth grade in government schools within the metropolis.


Earlier, the lunch program was limited to Grade 5 only. Later, while delivering the budget speech for fiscal year 2022/23 on May 29, Finance Minister Janardan Sharma had mentioned that the lunch program had been extended to up to Grade 6. “I have extended the lunch program to Grade 6 in the next fiscal year with the aim of gradually extending it to Grade 8,” Minister Sharma had said while delivering the budget speech.

In the eighth executive meeting of the KMC held today, Mayor Shah made the proposal to provide lunch expenses to the children studying in Grades 7 and 8 as well.


Shah proposed that the Government of Nepal provides Rs 15 to each student of up to Grade 6 and the KMC will provide an additional Rs 10 to each student including the students of Grades 7 and 8.


During the meeting, Mayor Shah has also proposed to appoint food technologists to monitor the quality of food sold by restaurants, hotels, vegetables and meat shops within the metropolitan city. Likewise, he has proposed to have General Practitioners (MDGP doctors and nurses) in all 32 wards of the metropolis.
