KATHMANDU, Dec 19: Landless squatters from Badarjhula of Madi Municipality in Chitwan have staged a protest at Maitighar in Kathmandu, demanding land ownership documents.

The group reached Kathmandu to raise the issue of landless squatters, stating that the Chitwan National Park and the municipality have done a very wrong thing by burning the homes of the landless squatters before relocating them to a suitable place.

According to activist Sarda Acharya, the protests are being staged to press the government to provide them land ownership documents.

Acharya said that the group has been forced to come to the capital after their continued protests in Chitwan were left unheeded. “We have come to Kathmandu to fight for our rights,” she said. Stating that there is a game of politics being played with the rights of the landless squatters, Acharya warned of continued protests until the landless squatters receive their land ownership documents.

The protestors carried placards with slogans like ‘Give us our land ownership documents’, ‘We are searching for new homes while you burn our settlements’ and ‘Demarcate the boundary between the national park and squatters’ settlements’ written on them.
