Local bodies in Jumla all prepared to launch early warning, preparedness systems

JUMLA, Dec 4 : Local bodies in Jumla are all set to launch community-based early warning and preparedness systems to avoid the impact of natural disasters such as floods, landslides, storms, and forest fires.

JUMLA, Dec 4 : Local bodies in Jumla are all set to launch community-based early warning and preparedness systems to avoid the impact of natural disasters such as floods, landslides, storms, and forest fires.  



Chandannath municipality and Tatopani rural municipality, Patarasi rural municipality and Tila rural municipality of the district are now preparing to launch community-based early warning and preparedness systems, according to officials.


“We have been facing several problems in our livelihood due to climate change, floods, landslides, and forest fires in recent years. So, now we are going to launch early warning and preparedness systems to avoid the impact of these natural disasters,” Nabaraj Neupane, the chairman of Tatopani rural municipality told Republica.

The local bodies are planning to establish disaster units and they will be opened round-the-clock. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) have been providing various materials and equipments to the local bodies to avoid the impact of natural disasters.


KIRDARC Nepal, an NGO working in the district, provided 23 types of 91 sets of equipments to the local bodies such as smart large television sets, computers, tables, chairs, power back-ups, multimedia, steel closet and cameras to launch early warning and preparedness systems to avoid the impact of these natural disasters.


The local bodies have also established the rescue and relief funds for disaster risk management. So far Rs 153,000 has been collected in the relief fund. In their annual policies, programs and budgets, local bodies in the district have given priority to early warning and preparedness systems to reduce the adverse impact of natural disasters.
