KATHMANDU, May 2: Hours after the resignation by chief minister of Lumbini Province, Shankar Pokharel, the ruling CPN-UML has decided to form a new government under the leadership of Pokharel himself.

A parliamentary party meeting of the UML, which was held earlier on Sunday, decided to form a one-party government under its leadership ‘in the changed context’ in the province.

According to Kamal Sherestha, a UML member of the province assembly, the party will form a majority government under Pokharel’s leadership as the party holds 41 seats in the 81-member province assembly. Originally the 87-member assembly was limited to 81 members as the CPN (Maoist) expelled two of its lawmakers and four others were suspended by the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP).

Shrestha added that a process of new government formation will proceed ahead as per the Constitution of Nepal. “The process will begin shortly and is expected to conclude today itself,” he added.

CM Pokharel resigned as the chief minister of the province earlier on Sunday morning as the province assembly was preparing to discuss on a no-confidence motion registered against him.
