KATHMANDU, Jan 27: Martyr Dharma Bhakta Mathema has been remembered today. His statue at Sifal, Kathmandu, was garlanded.

The floral offer to the martyr is a part of the Martyrs Memorial Week being observed across the country in memory of four martyrs including Mathema, Shukra Raj Shastri, Dasharath Chand, Gangalal Shrestha who were executed in January 1941 by the autocratic Rana rulers for launching a democratic movement.

On Thursday, the first day of the campaign, a life-size statue of Shastri was unveiled at Pachali, Teku, where he attained martyrdom.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishwor Pokharel and KMC's Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya jointly unveiled the statue. The KMC has announced to observe the martyr memorial week with various programmes that began on January 24.

Speaking on the occasion, Shakya stressed the need for pursuing prosperity and independence to realise martyrs' dreams.
