MUGU, Nov 24: Chhayanath Rara Municipality that recently announced ban on the sale, distribution and consumption of alcohol has started taking action against rule violators. Officials said they arrest the rule violators and those found guilty are made to pay certain amount in bail and are freed.

Though the municipality has set up a 'mini-court' to punish those violating the rule, there is no place to detain or imprison the malefactors, so they are freed, according to officials.

No other local unit in the Karnali Province has introduced such strict policy against alcohol consumption so far.

After organizing an anti-alcohol campaign for a month, the municipality had officially declared itself alcohol-free on November 17.

On Tuesday, the municipality's judicial committee took action against two individuals for consuming alcohol and causing disturbance in public. Likewise, on Wednesday, two more were punished for selling alcohol. All those arrested were released after posting a bail of Rs 2,000 each.

But one shopkeeper was made to pay a bail of Rs 15,000, according to Suntala Rokaya, coordinator of the judicial committee. Following the footsteps of Chhayanath Rara Municipality, neighboring Soru and Khatyad rural municipalities have also intensified campaigns against alcohol.
