National drama festival kicks off in Pokhara

National Drama Festival has begun at Gandarva Theater at Gairapatan, Pokhara on Thursday. The drama festival was organized by Nepal Academy of Music and Drama (NAMUDA).

National Drama Festival has begun at Gandarva Theater at Gairapatan, Pokhara on Thursday. The drama festival was organized by Nepal Academy of Music and Drama (NAMUDA).



The festival was inaugurated by Prithivi Subba Gurung, chief minister of Province 4. Acknowledging the status of drama in Nepal, he stressed on the fact that the academy of music and drama should be decentralized. “Since we have already started practicing the federal system academy of music and drama should be established in each province,” said the chief minister.

Upon the completion of inauguration session, the play ‘Thangla’, written by Saru Bhakta Shrestha was staged which was directed by Anup Baral. The play was outstanding because the play was enacted by experienced actor. The local audiences were enthralled by the performance of the artists. Moreover, Director Baral was excited when his directional play was being showcased at his hometown after a long period of time.


‘Thanagla’ was also staged on Friday at 1pm and 5pm while Rajan Khatiwada’s play ‘Antigone’ will be staged on Sunday. The organizers have been expecting the festival to help unite all theater artists across the country and also help them know about the activities related to theater. 


According to Pariwartan Karki, president of Pokhara Theater, the festival was organized on the occasion of World Theater Day which will also hold discussion on the scope of drama in Nepal. 

‘Virgin Katha’, ‘Nari Shikshya’, ‘Jaigan’, ‘Saannani’, ‘Sante Raja’, ‘Ek Chihaan’, ‘Panighatta’ and many more plays will be showcased at the festival.


 Meanwhile, the tickets are sold at Rs 100 for students whereas normal people are charged Rs 500 each.


The festival is slated to continue till March 28 where 10 plays from different places will be staged.
