NC denounces govt decision to sack Province 2 governor

‘Caretaker government does not have the right to sack or appoint new government officials’
By Republica

KATHMANDU, Feb 19: The main opposition party, Nepali Congress (NC), has denounced the decision of the government to sack the governor of province 2. The government on Friday appointed Rajesh Ahiraj as the new governor of Province 2 shortly after Tilak Pariyar — a former Maoist leader close to Pushpa Kamal Dahal — was sacked from the position on Friday.

Issuing a press statement, NC Spokesperson Bishwa Prakash Sharma said the government, which has been rendered into a caretaker one, cannot sack or appoint anyone to such high offices. Sharma has also warned the government to immediately stop these kinds of acts carried out arbitrarily.

Sharma has recalled that the Oli-led government had sacked province governors duly appointed by the NC-led government in an arbitrary manner. The decision to sack the Province 2 governor, in the same manner, has only further eroded the dignity of the province chief.

The NC has also alleged the ruling faction of the NCP of putting undue pressure on the Election Commission (EC) to delay the process of settling the authenticity disputes between the two factions within the NCP. Spokesperson Sharma in the statement has said that the controversial moves of the government to sack and appoint key government officials even after the announcement of midterm polls is absolutely objectionable in view of the ethical conduct.
