KATHMANDU, Feb 10: Nepal Police has arrested 5,364 defendants who were found guilty by the court and were absconding in the last six months of the current fiscal year. According to the Nepal Police Headquarters, those fugitives who remained out of contact between mid-July and mid-February were arrested and sent to jail.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CIB) arrested 54 individuals, Kathmandu Valley Police Office arrested 613 individuals, Koshi Province Police arrested 825 individuals, Madhesh Province Police arrested 1,797 individuals, Bagmati Province Police arrested 522 individuals, Gandaki Province Police arrested 447 individuals, Lumbini Province Police arrested 916 individuals, Karnali Province Police arrested 83 individuals and Sudurpaschim Province Police arrested 107 individuals.
This number marks an increase of 3,150 compared to the corresponding period in the previous fiscal year, as reported by Nepal Police Headquarters.

Police authorities stated that the courts had imposed prison sentences totaling 2,135 years, 10 months, and 26 days to these absconding convicts.
Furthermore, the Police Headquarters disclosed that fines totaling Rs 1.19 billion, as determined by the courts, were also collected from the arrested convicts. This amount is an increase of about 313 percent compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Bhim Prasad Dhakal, spokesperson for the police, said the rise in the number of arrests of absconding convicts is due to the priority and proactive efforts of Nepal Police.
DIG Dhakal said, "Through coordinated efforts with the Supreme Court Judgment Execution Directorate and other agencies, we have successfully deterred and controlled the trend of evading judicial punishment or fleeing from police operations."
According to him, the police have launched a special campaign in coordination with the courts to enforce court verdicts across all districts.
