MAKWANPUR, Feb 19: Nepal Police Club has booked its place in the semifinals of the ongoing 3rd Suman Bomjan Memorial Tuborg Hetuada Gold Cup football tournament defeating 10-man Bijaya Youth Club 3-0 on Sunday. Hetuada-based Bijaya Youth Club, who had won the Simara Gold Cup two years ago, failed to counter the challenge from the departmental team, after Abhishek Rijal scored the opener in the 11th minute at the ground of Institute of Forestry. Able to put pressure on Bijaya Youth in its home ground from the first whistle, Nepal Police doubled the lead in the 40th minute from the man-of-the-match Rijal’s brace. Even though the home team tried to fight back at the start of the second half with some aggressive display, Rabi Paswan scored the third for Nepal Police in the 59th minute to seal the game and book its semifinal berth. The quarterfinal saw some brawl toward the end of the game after Bijaya Youth’s Manoj Bista attacked the opponent footballer Prelan Tamang, even after the referee awarded foul against Tamang in the 81st minute. Bista was sent off following the clash. Police will play either CMG Sankata Club or Ruslan Three Star Club in the semifinal on Thursday, who will face each other on Tuesday in the last group match of Group ‘B’. Likewise, in the last Group A match, Tribhuvan Army will face Far-western XI on Monday. Manang Marsyangdi Club has already advanced into the semifinal defeating the departmental team Armed Police Force 1-0 on Sunday. The final match of the tournament will be played on February 24.
