Nepal reports first COVID-19 death in three months


The daily COVID-19 related death count in Nepal on Thursday was reported zero. It is the first time in the past six months that the country witnessed no fatality due to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).


Nepal had reported zero death linked with the viral infection for the last time on July 21, 2020. After the country confirmed two new fatalities on July 22, the country continued reporting deaths every single day. The highest number of single-day deaths in the country were reported on November 4 earlier last year.


Talking to Republica over the phone, Dr Samir Kumar Adhikari, assistant spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), confirmed that it is the first day in the past 191 days [from July 22, 2020 to Jan 28, 2021] when the country reported no deaths due to the viral investion.


Nepal first reported the first COVID-19 related death on May 16 last year. A 29-year-old woman from Sindhupalchowk district located to the north east of the country’s capital, Kathmandu, was the first to succumb to COVID-19.


Nepal has so far confirmed 2020 COVID-19 related deaths which accounts for 0.74 percent of the total infections in the country. With 213 new cases being detected in the country on Thursday, the case tally in Nepal has jumped to 270,588.
