KATHMANDU, May 25:  Gautam Buddha International Airport (GBIA) located in Bhairahawa, Nepal's second international airport, is seen to be weak in customs duty collection. Due to the lack of regular flights from this airport, which was put into operation a year ago, the collection of customs duties has been weak.

According to the Department of Customs, GBIA Customs Office had a target of customs revenue collection worth Rs 809.2 million for the current fiscal year 2022/23. However, the office has collected only Rs 8.5 million during this period. This is only 10% achievement compared to the target till Chaitra (mid-March to mid-April).

At present, there are 33 customs points in Nepal including two airports (Tribhuwan and GBIA). Therefore, customs revenue collection is also done through these points. The department of customs had set a target of collecting 490 billion rupees in customs revenue till Chaitra. During this period, the collection was only 285 billion rupees. This is only 58 percent of the target.

Meanwhile, Chobhar dry port, another new customs point that came into operation this year, has collected more revenue than the target. The target was to collect 809.2 million rupees from this customs point till March. The collection is 142.6 million rupees. This achievement is 160 percent of the target.
