SURKHET, June 10: Parliamentarians of Karnali Province have demanded the formation of a high-level probe committee to investigate the murder of Mana Sarki, a Dalit woman member of Naharinath Rural Municipality.

They have also demanded to declare Sarki a martyr and provide her family members with relief. Speaking at a meeting on Friday, parliamentarian Sita Nepali demanded formation of the committee stating that Sarki was killed just because she belonged to Dalit community.

"The provincial government must form a probe committee to avoid such heinous incidents in the future," said Nepali, adding," She must be declared a martyr and her family must receive relief and compensation soon."

Another parliamentarian Kaushilawati Khatri stated that it's sad to witness such incident when efforts have been made to create a just society that ensures equality for all.

"Punishing the culprits is not enough. Efforts should be made to make sure that there won't be such incidents in the future," she said adding, "It is important to bring those involved in caste-based discrimination under the ambit of law." Parliamentarian Dan Singh Pariyar urged the government to identify the culprits and punish them as soon as possible. "Dalit community has played a pivotal role in bringing change but still they have been the victims of such crimes," said Pariyar.
