KATHMANDU, Dec 5: Although Prime Minister KP Oli has been recovering faster than expected, he has to undergo regular dialysis, said sources at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital who are informed about his condition.
According to the hospital sources, the head of government has undergone dialysis three times since he was admitted to the Manmohan Cardiothoracic, Vascular and Transplant Center at the hospital on November 26 for appendicitis surgery.
Issuing a statement on Wednesday, Dr Uttam Krishna Shrestha, executive director of the center, said Prime Minister Oli is under regular medical observation following the surgery. Asked about the dialysis, Dr Shrestha said over the phone that he was not authorized to speak to media about that.

But other doctors at the hospital who are informed about the prime minister’s treatment said he needs to undergo dialysis at least twice a week for maintaining the functioning of his kidneys.
A secretariat meeting of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) discussed party Chairperson Oli’s health on Wednesday. “Dialysis is taking place as needed. We will decide about his next treatment plans in consultation with doctors once he completes the ongoing treatment,” said NCP spokesman Narayan Kaji Shrestha after the meeting.
Asked about treatment plans abroad, Shrestha added that the party will reach a decision only after the prime minister’s discharge. “He is undergoing the dialysis process after his plasmapheresis in Singapore failed to yield satisfactory results. He has been recovering fast after appendicitis and peritonitis treatment,” he said.
Hospital sources said that a decision on the prime minister’s discharge from hospital is likely after his dialysis on Thursday. “A decision about his discharge is yet to be taken. He could be discharged at the end of this week or early next week,” said Oli’s press advisor Surya Thapa.
Oli underwent kidney transplant some 12 years ago and has undergone dialysis four times after his transplanted kidney deteriorated. He has been planning a re-transplant, according to party leaders. In August, he underwent plasmapheresis treatment in Singapore.
