Protecting elderly from pandemic discussed

KATHMANDU, August 16: JICA Alumni Association Nepal (JAAN) in collaboration with Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) organized a virtual seminar on “Learning Elderly Care in Japan and Safety Measures for Aging People in the Context of COVID-19 Pandemic” on Friday.

KATHMANDU, August 16: JICA Alumni Association Nepal (JAAN) in collaboration with Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) organized a virtual seminar on “Learning Elderly Care in Japan and Safety Measures for Aging People in the Context of COVID-19 Pandemic” on Friday.



In the program participated by as many as 300 people from Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the Maldives and Japan,  the participants discussed how the ageing population can be saved from the pandemic.

Dr Taijo Sakata, the medical doctor of Peace Winds Japan, shared the experience of how Japan is working to protect its elderly from the Covid-19 pandemic. Other experts pointed the need to learn from Japan how elderly population can be saved from the pandemic.


Yam Kumari Khadka, the secretary of Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens, informed that a ten-year plan is being devised to ensure welfare of the elderly people in Nepal. Japanese Ambassador to Nepal, Masamichi Saigo, said care and protection of elderly people is becoming a serious issue even for countries like Japan. The program was moderated by Kiran Rupakhetee, secretary of JAAN.
