KATHMANDU, June 12: The reconstruction work of Balgopaleshwor Temple, historically and archaeologically important temple located at the center of Ranipokhari pond in the capital, is underway.

The Department of Archeology (DoA) had started reconstruction work of the temple 20 days ago under the structural design of engineer Sampat Ghimire.

Talking to Republica Online, Ram Bahadur Kunwar, spokesperson of the DoA, said that the reconstruction work is in full swing and will be completed soon.  However, he could not pinpoint the date of completion.

The DoA had barred the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) from reconstructing the temple of Balgopaleshwor Temple 10 months ago, accusing the civic body of breaching archeological norms that need to be followed while carrying out reconstruction/renovation of archaeological heritage sites.

History has it that King Pratap Malla built Ranipokhari in a bid to provide solace to his wife after she plunged into grief over the demise of their youngest son, Chakravatindra Malla.

The April 25, 2015 mega quake had caused damage to the temple, Ranipokhari and other structures in the vicinity.
