SC issues interim order not to demolish Devkota’s house

The Supreme Court has issued an interim order not to demolish the house of the poet laureate Laxmi Prasad Devkota on Sunday. A joint bench of Justices Anil Kumar Sinha and Bam Kumar Shrestha issued an interim order to work in coordination with the Department of Archeology as Devkota's house is of archeological importance.

The Supreme Court has issued an interim order not to demolish the house of the poet laureate Laxmi Prasad Devkota on Sunday. A joint bench of Justices Anil Kumar Sinha and Bam Kumar Shrestha issued an interim order to work in coordination with the Department of Archeology as Devkota's house is of archeological importance.

A writ petition was filed earlier at the Supreme Court after the house of Mahakavi Devkota in Maiti Devi, Kathmandu was demolished. The Supreme Court has ordered the government authorities concerned to protect Devkota's house as it is a historically important site.


The Nepal Academy has already started to demolish Devkota's house. Stating that archeological material may have been kept in Devkota's house, the apex court asked the government bodies concerned to demolish the house only in coordination with the the Department of Archeology.

A writ petition was filed against the Nepal Academy after it started demolishing the 80-year-old house of Devkota to build a museum. His house was bought by the government for Rs 25 million.
