KATHMANDU, July 23: The Supreme Court (SC) has directed the administration to register the writ petition of Posh Raj Pokharel, who retired as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) despite being recommended for promotion to Additional Inspector General (AIG).
Pokharel filed the petition on July 21, challenging his retirement as DIG when he had been recommended for AIG. Initially, the SC administration refused to register his petition. After this dismissal, Pokharel filed a new petition against the SC administration’s decision.

On Tuesday, Justice Tek Prasad Dhungana's bench ordered the registration of Pokharel's writ petition. The case will now proceed through the legal system.
Pokharel was recommended for promotion to AIG by the promotion recommendation committee, chaired by Home Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal, on June 24. Had the promotion been processed, he would have served as an AIG for two days, July 4 and July 5. However, following the withdrawal of support by the UML, the cabinet did not make a decision on his promotion, leading to Pokharel's compulsory leave from July 3.
In his petition, Pokharel has named the Prime Minister’s Office as a defendant, claiming that his retirement was a result of the failure to promote him despite the recommendation.
