KATHMANDU, Sept 8: The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the government to furnish information in writing on the ongoing preparations for local, provincial and federal elections.

Responding to a writ petition filed by advocates Chandra Kanta Gyawali, Bimal Gyawali, Leeladhar Upadhyaya and Shashi Kumar Karki , the single bench of justice Dr Aananda Mohan Bhattarai issued a show cause notice to the government on Thursday. The court has also listed the writ petition in its priority for hearings.

The advocates on Monday had filed the writ petition claiming that the government's failure to announce dates for the three elections has raised legal and constitutional questions.

The petitioners have also argued that the delay in announcing election dates could ultimately lead to the government missing the deadline of electing House of Representatives by January 21, 2018 as envisaged by the transitional provision of the constitution. The petitioners have claimed that the government is yet to publish its action plan to hold elections even after 11 months of promulgation of the constitution.

They have named Prime Minister, Office of Prime Minister and Council of Minister, the Parliament Secretariat, main opposition CPN-UML, Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice and the Election Commission as the defendants in the writ petition.
