KATHMANDU, March 7: While raising questions over the discrimination made against certain lawmakers while distributing the fund, the Supreme Court on Friday sought explanation from the government authorities concerned over the budget distributed in the name of Local Infrastructure Development Partnership Program (LIDPP).

A five-member constitutional bench comprising Chief Justice Cholendra SJB Rana and justices Deepak Kumar Karki, Meera Khadka, Harikrishna Karki and Bishwambhar Shrestha sought explanation from the government authorities on the physical infrastructure development program.

The apex court was responding to a writ petition filed by three lawmakers of the main opposition Nepali Congress Prakash Snehi, Rangamati Shahi and Prakash Panta. The apex court sought explanation behind such discrimination from the Ministry of Finance, Secretariat of the Federal Parliament.

The NC lawmakers had filed the petition last year seeking the apex court intervention into the matter as they claimed that there was discriminatory treatment against certain lawmakers elected under the First Past the Post (FPTP) electoral system and Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system while distributing funds to them. Arguing that such distribution was against Articles 84 and 86 of the Constitution, the petitioners claimed that the fund was distributed in a "monopolistic manner" and it was "difficult to tolerate such discrimination."
