Settlements in Sunsari terrorized by monkeys

SUNSARI, July 27: Multiple settlements of Devangunj Rural Municipality in Sunsari district have been continuously terrorized by monkeys for years. However, the conflict between the locals and the monkeys has intensified at the moment, causing even more problems for the local residents.

SUNSARI, July 27: Multiple settlements of Devangunj Rural Municipality in Sunsari district have been continuously terrorized by monkeys for years. However, the conflict between the locals and the monkeys has intensified at the moment, causing even more problems for the local residents.



In addition, the population of monkeys living in bamboo groves and old semal (Cotton) trees near the settlements have increased by two-fold in recent years, which has worried the locals.

According to Surendra Mehata, a local of Kaptanganj-4, the monkeys have caused havoc in the settlement near the border areas including Dewanganj, Kaptanganj, Sahebganj and Guski. The native monkeys have destroyed crops including vegetables, fruits, maize, paddy etc, planted in the fields by farmers.


The monkeys living in the bamboo groves and semal trees have started to terrorize the locals and destroy their crops.


Over 200 monkeys currently reside in Shankarpur alone of Dewanganj-4. The locals have been drawing the attention of the authorities concerned of Dewanganj Rural Municipality and the local government of Sunsari to find a long-term solution to the problem. However, locals complain that they continue to suffer as their cries of help have fallen on deaf ears.
