KATHMANDU, March 15: Students of Ullens School and staffers from the Himalayan Climate Initiative (HCI) played their part to take urgent actions to reduce climate change in the country and across the world.
The protest was part of the global climate movement that was initiated by Greta Thunberg, Swedish teenager who started the movement in August 2018. She started a movement with a one-woman school strike on Friday in front of Swedish parliament last August.
In Nepal, students and environment activists came out on the street demanding urgent climate action. Around 120 students from Ullens urged Chiri Babu Maharjan, mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City to save the degrading environment.
Failure is Not an Option for Nepal
Mayor Maharjan said that the government was prioritizing conservation and working to make the environment clean. He believed that such steps would help to understand climate issues.
Likewise, Over 100 youth gathered outside Maitighar Mandala with posters and banners demanding climate action in Nepal.
Bivishika Bhandari, Head of Advocacy and Outreach at Himalayan Climate Initiative (HCI) stated that “Although Nepal does not contribute much to climate change; it does get affected the most. Our actions today will determine whether our future generations will enjoy the view of snow-capped Mt. Everest in person or in pictures.”
Nepal is the fourth most vulnerable countries to climate change in the world.
Today, millions took to the streets of 105 countries to draw government’s attention to climate change. Thunberg has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for shifting the world’s attention to climate change. If she wins it, she will be the youngest recipient of the famed award.
Pakistan’s Malala Yousafzai is the youngest recipient of the award. She got the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 17.
