Becomes Nepal’s first boxer to win silver in Asian-level championship
Kathmandu, Jan 22: Nepali boxing has added another feather in its hat with Susma Tamang’s historic victory in Thailand on Sunday. This is the first time that any Nepali boxer has ever secured a silver medal in Asian-level championship, albeit the achievement is in age-group category.

Tamang’s semifinal win over a Mongolian opponent during the ASBC U-22 Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championship underway in Thai capital Bangkok is a milestone in Nepal’s boxing history, Nepal Boxing Association wrote in an email to Republica.
With the victory, Tamang not only secured a place in the final against Uzbek amateur Farzona Fozilova but also became the one and only boxer from Nepal to secure at least a silver medal in the Asian level.
Boxer Umesh Maskey had secured Nepal’s first bronze medal in the Asian level back in the 1980s while Deepak Maharjan had settled for bronze in the recent 2010 edition of Asian Games. The biggest ever success of Nepal in the Asian Games was in 1986 Seoul Asiad when Nepal secured 8 bronze medals at the time when late Sharad Chandra Shah was the head of Nepal’s sports governing body.
On Tuesday, Tamang defeated her Mongolian opponent after the referee stopped the contest in the third round of women’s 48 kg category. She will now face the Uzbek opponent on January 25.
